The future of energy: Energy Towers (Down draft)

The debate over climate change seems almost endless, but then again thats just how technical stuff works when politicians are to take care of it. It has already been established that we will soon run out of fossil fuels after having added some more greenhouse gases to the already polluted atmosphere. The question that then arises is where will the energy come from once we run short of the conventional fuels? Solar energy is just too expensive, wind energy is seasonal, water reserves will probably dry off even before all the fossil fuel is burnt. What then will fuel the energy in future?

An American scientist named Dr. Phillip Carlson had apparently thought of a solution, but could not realize it. According to him the energy in future will be generated in tall energy towers (sounds much like science fiction, doesnt it?). A team of professors from the Technion Israel Institute of Technology has expanded the vision further and have validated the concept of energy tower.
As the air becomes light due to solar heating, it expands and moves up causing the cooler air to rush in and fill the vacuum. This is how air attains kinetic energy and wind is created, but this is something we all already knew, right? The only problem with such wind is that is does not remain the same throughout the year and in order to propel the wind turbine a certain minimum wind speed is required, also wind turbines often fail beyond a maximum wind speed of a few tens of km/hr. An energy tower also technically comprises of several turbines that are propelled by wind. Only difference being, the wind in this case is created by the tower itself and not dependent on nature.

The concept that these towers use is known as downdraft. In this tower, the hot dry air in the atmosphere a few hundred meters above the surface of the ground is forced to cool down by inducing a spray of cold water at that height. As a result the cool air moves down the tunnel and goes on to attain desired speed. This high speed air then comes out of the tower passing through any of the several turbines installed at the base of the tower.

Energy towers by many claims is capable of fulfilling the energy needs of a city of upto 10 lakh population, only thing is that for the tower to generate such high amount of energy it will have to be more than 1200 meters tall and several meters wide. Also such energy towers require a large amount of water and therefore need to be places close to a big water source.

Another type of energy tower concept that works on the exact opposite way is the solar updraft energy tower. Given the proper incentives into research and development of energy towers, we could soon be looking at an unlimited clean supply of energy that never runs out. The only input needed is on part of the engineers to focus and make such concepts a reality of the near future to come.
